Personal profile
Of all the courses I have taught, Twentieth-Century French Literature is
the most interesting, possibly because it reflects the tumultuous world
events during my own lifetime. Similarly, the Contemporary French Culture
course is always intriguing because it carries students far beyond the spoken
language, into an understanding and appreciation of others.
The eighteen-century Mississippi-French connection is also fascinating.
Early French explorers shaped our history in surprising ways, as can be seen
in Rencontres sur
le Mississipi, a French reader I co-authored with
Margaret Hawthorne, and which is filled with journal entries, official
letters, diaries and ship's logs.
I am also Director of the Modern Language Laboratory, which includes
audio/visual equipment, computers and satellite reception.
My weekends are consumed with grandchildren, growing mushrooms and
sailing. Besides regional regattas, my family has enjoyed sailing along the
barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Bahamas
and in Belize.
