Basics of Document and Image Delivery on the Web

There are many document formats which may be delivered through the WWW. For all cases, three issues must be resolved:

  1. The document must be posted to a Web Server - typically your ISP site;
  2. The Web Server must be configured to deliver the document MIME type - this must be done by the Web Master at your ISP;
  3. Users must have their Web Browser configured to interpret the document MIME type [helpers/plug-ins] - Browsers come able to interpret some MIME types but often you need to post instructions and links for easy download of plug-ins.

For example:

You want to post a PowerPoint presentation on your web page. The steps are:

  1. On the Web, look up the "Standard Mime Type" * for PP presentations;
  2. Check with the Web Master at your ISP to verify that the MIME type can be delivered by the ISP Web Server;
  3. Add a note on your Web Page explaining what a user will need to do in order to view your PP presentation.
