Mission Statement

o provide students with a solid foundation in the principles of biology, from the workings of a cell to the interrelationships among organisms and the physical environment.

o prepare students with the factual basis of the current understanding of the living world, and the skills to evaluate, question, and integrate new discoveries.

o help students, through laboratory course work and independent research, to gain an appreciation of the process by which scientific knowledge is acquired.

o train students to apply their skills and knowledge after graduation, whether in immediate employment, graduate training, or professional training.

Course Work he Biology Department offers both the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelorof Arts degrees in Biology.  All majors must take Introductory Cell Biology, Organismal Biology I and II, and Senior Seminar.  Other courses may be selected to support an individual student's interests, but at least one course must be taken in each of the major areas of biology:  cellular& molecular biology, organismal structure & function, and ecology& evolution.

o grade lower than a "C" will be accepted in any course to fulfill a major or a minor in biology.  For the major, at least 4 biology courses plus Senior Seminar must be taken in residence at Millsaps;  for the minor, at least 3 out of the five necessary courses must be taken in residenceat Millsaps.

Research Opportunities tudents are encouraged to participate in research projects under the guidanceof a faculty mentor.  Course credit for research may be granted through Undergraduate Research or for those students who qualify, through the Honors Program.  The department has excellent facilities to support experimental research in physiology, molecular biology, and microscopy.  Internships in local agencies, clinics, and laboratories are also available.

Attention Millsaps College Biology Department Grads!  We now have an e-mail address for you to send updates on where you are and what you are doing!  We plan to attach to our home page a bulletin board for departmental alums to post their latest info as a way of keeping in touch with each other.  If you would like to send information to be posted on the bulletin board, the address is Bio-Grads@millsaps.edu Please include your year of graduation and type your information in five or fewer sentences--it will be posted exactly as you typed it.  We look forward to hearing from you!
