05.21.2007 Port Douglas, Queensland

In Port Douglas, we found several restaurants displaying photographs of Bill Clinton in their front windows.  Business is booming.  Bill and Hillary had visited here in 1996 and Bill happened to be in Port Douglas again on September 11, 2001.  It would be an interesting experiment to have a restaurant replace the Clintin picture with one of his successor and see what the effect on business would be.  But no business owner would be willing to take such a risk.

A CBC television show about a 1964 murder in Meadville, Mississippi, that we saw on Australian television last night reconnected us to home—although not in the happiest of terms.  As we were watching, a vehicle pulled out of a driveway or service station and began going down the road . . . on the right.  Anne and I simultaneously thought for a moment that they were on the wrong side of the road!  Obviously we’ve been in the former British Empire for a long time!

Anne and I love Port Douglas.  We decided that it is our favorite resort town we have been to anywhere in the world.
